The Lakes and Waterfalls

The very heart and soul of Plitvice Lakes lies in their interconnected network of lakes, nature’s living, breathing masterpiece, crafted over millennia into the cascading landmark we now know. Due to its hydrogeological conditions, they are separated into the Upper and Lower Lakes – and you can get to know them on foot, by boat or via a panoramic shuttle. Here’s what not to miss.

Big Lake

Contrary to its name (veliko meaning big or large), The Big Lake – or Jovinovac Veliki – is actually among the park’s smaller bodies of water, belonging to the group of Upper Lakes. With surrounding forests and still waters, its peaceful atmosphere is unmissable.

Kozjak Lake

A shimmering staple of Plitvice, the largest and deepest lake of the system is a natural barrier between the Upper and Lower lakes, created some 400 years ago by natural flooding of waterfalls and merging of two lakes. It also features The Isle of Štefanija, the park’s only island, with a surrounding myth you’ll want to discover in a serene atmosphere.

Veliki Slap

A must-see attraction for any visitor is the highest waterfall, Veliki Slap. Towering at 78 meters over a crystal-clear lake, fed by Plitvica Potok River, this is the highest waterfall in entire Croatia. During winter the stream freezes, creating a life-size ice sculpture, while during summer it proves a thunderous spectacle.

Photography Tips for Capturing the Park’s Beauty

Attention, shutterbugs! Plitvice Lakes are a photographer’s dream come true, offering virtually endless options on every step. But you’ll want to come prepared. Aim for the golden hour (after sunrise or before sunset) or blue hour (inversely, before sunrise or after sunset) for specific atmospheres and beautiful shots. Play with reflections, use a tripod and look for details (it’s not all about the big picture – there’s magic to be found on moss-covered rocks, wildflowers or forests). Word to the wise, water and expensive equipment don’t mix. If you’re a more adventurous photographer, waterproof your camera housing before getting too close to the lakes. Remember, patience is key! Take your time, experiment and enjoy your tour of Croatia’s landmark beauty.
